Online renewal covers the 10-year option from 2 November

The Immigration Department announced on Facebook that MyOnline Passport now handles both five-year and 10-year renewals starting 2 November. Before this, the 10-year passport was in-person only at an immigration office.

The fee schedule follows the rates published on 3 June on the department's website. Your age and the validity you pick determine what you pay.

  2. The real numbers2/6

    RM350 for 10 years, RM400 for two five-year renewals

RM50saved by choosing the 10-year option

A 10-year passport costs RM350. Two five-year passports over the same 10-year span cost RM400, so the single 10-year option saves you RM50. Senior citizens pay RM175 for the 10-year passport instead of RM200 for two five-year ones, saving RM25.

Applicants under 18, Hajj pilgrims, and undergraduate students under 21 studying abroad can only renew for five years, not 10.

  3. How it affects your wallet3/6

One fewer trip, RM50 less over a decade

If you travel often, the 10-year passport means one fewer renewal and one fewer trip to collect the new booklet. The RM50 saving is real but small; the bigger win is the time you don't spend queuing at an immigration office.

e.g. If you normally spend a half-day off work and RM15 on transport to collect a passport, skipping one renewal cycle saves roughly that half-day plus RM15 on top of the RM50 fee difference.

  4. What to do, step by step4/6

Renew online: what you need and where to go

MyOnline Passport handles renewals only. First-time applications, lost or damaged passports still require a visit to an immigration office.

    1. Have your MyKad, current passport number, email address, and a recent photo ready before you start.
    2. Go to the MyOnline Passport portal and select your renewal validity (five or 10 years, depending on your eligibility).
    3. Pay the fee online. The 10-year passport is RM350 (RM175 for senior citizens); the five-year passport is RM200 (RM100 for senior citizens).
    4. Wait for collection or delivery as instructed by the department. If you are overseas, apply at the nearest Malaysian embassy, high commission, or consulate.

  5. Why it matters5/6

Why the 10-year cap exists: the August rule change

In August, the Immigration Department set a maximum 10-year validity for all passports. Before that, renewing within six months of expiry added the remaining months from your old passport, pushing some booklets past 10 years.

Some airlines' check-in systems flagged these longer-validity passports as invalid. The department said renewing early no longer stacks those extra months.

  6. What to watch6/6

Check your passport photo page before your next flight

Look at the issue and expiry dates on your passport's photo page. If they are more than 10 years apart, the department will replace the passport for free.

Apply at a nearby immigration office, or at the nearest Malaysian embassy, high commission, or consulate if you are overseas. Do this before you book your next flight to avoid a check-in problem.
