Two new items enter the price-control list for Deepavali

For the first time, santan and Chinese potatoes are listed under maximum price controls, joining nine other essential goods capped from 4 to 10 November 2026.

Deputy KPDN Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh announced the move on 1 November at a Jualan RAHMAH MADANI event at Rumah Pangsa Lereh, Klebang, Melaka. She reminded traders not to exploit the Deepavali demand spike.

The controls sit under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which caps what sellers can charge at both wholesale and retail levels.

Eleven goods are capped this year. Two are new. The window is seven days, timed to the Deepavali shopping rush.

Separately, KPDN is running 103 jualan murah series nationwide from 19 October to 15 November, selling goods at 10 to 30 per cent below market price.

  4. Why it matters3/6

How the price ceiling and jualan murah differ

The price ceiling is a legal cap: no seller can charge above the maximum set by KPDN for those 11 items during 4 to 10 November. It applies to every shop, wet market and supermarket.

The jualan murah events are separate. KPDN organises pop-up sales where approved traders sell at 10 to 30 per cent below market price. They are voluntary for sellers and run from 19 October to 15 November.

Between January and September 2026, KPDN recorded 26,185 jualan murah series with over 28 million transactions. Budget 2027 sets aside RM750 million with a target of 35,000 series.

  5. How it affects your wallet4/6

What the caps mean for your Deepavali kitchen budget

If you are cooking for Deepavali, the ceiling stops santan and Chinese potato prices from surging ahead of Deepavali, the worry that prompted the controls in the first place. You still pay the market price, but it cannot exceed the KPDN maximum.

For deeper savings, the jualan murah events sell goods at 10 to 30 per cent below market price, which may include items on the capped list. e.g. a bottle of santan that normally costs RM6 could go for RM4.20 to RM5.40 at a jualan murah stall.

The direct saving per household is small on one or two items. The bigger effect is across a full festive grocery list of 11 capped goods bought over several days.

Questions people ask

What is the maximum price for santan and Chinese potatoes?

KPDN sets the exact ceiling for each item at both wholesale and retail levels. The figures are published on the KPDN official website. Check there before you shop, as the published ceilings cover both wholesale and retail levels.

Are the jualan murah events the same as the price ceiling?

No. The price ceiling is a legal maximum any seller can charge. Jualan murah are organised sales where approved traders sell below market price at 10 to 30 per cent off. You can benefit from both.

What happens if a shop charges above the ceiling?

That is an offence under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. Report it through KPDN's official complaint channels listed on their website. Keep the receipt and note the shop name and date. KPDN said it is monitoring throughout the control period.
